The afternoon includes nap time for younger students and then a transition into the afternoon work period. At this time, children go home unless they are enrolled in our extended day program. Over 40 years of providing high-quality Montessori Education
Read more about why we educate for independence, and how we support independence for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-age children. At Guidepost, we join with parents on their mission to help their child grow and live well. Together, we design an education to empower each child to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence she needs to craft an independent, flourishing life. The Practical Life curriculum is about more than teaching the child to independently dress himself or prepare his own snack, though these are important and meaningful skills. Throughout the 3-year program, the child builds his ability to concentrate, pay attention to details, act with responsibility and self-discipline, and follow increasingly complex steps to achieve a goal.

The use of language, the expansion of vocabulary, and the translation of spoken language into concrete symbols are all very fascinating to him. Through the use of sensory-rich, hands-on materials, a child as young as 2.5 can begin building the foundations of literacy. GreatSchools is the leading nonprofit providing high-quality information that supports parents pursuing a great education for their child, schools striving for excellence, and communities working to diminish inequities in education. Through the use of Montessori materials and activities, this approach to education develops the capacity for creative thinking and effort. Children develop the ability to joyously apply knowledge to the task of pursuing or creating something that is personally meaningful, which is the very hallmark of creativity. Children's House Montessori School's mission is to provide an educational culture that respects the child's innate desire to learn.

We have specific health and safety protocols our staff follow when children exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 and other common illnesses, such as stomach flu. With a diverse set of life and teaching experiences, they provide wonderful care and guidance to all children. Our Montessori School has a carefully prepared environment that allows for individualized lessons according to the needs and developmental readiness of the child. With this remarkable method, the small child is revealed as a lover of work – intellectual and practical work – spontaneously chosen and carried out with profound joy.

The child works with color tablets in the visual sense, for example, and pairs red with red, blue with blue, and so on. Eventually, the child arranges the colors of over 5 dozen tablets arranging each color from the lightest to darkest shade. In the tactile sense, the child works with materials like the touch tablets, eventually arranging items from smoothest to roughest while blindfolded. In the auditory sense, the child pairs bells that emit the same note, eventually arranging a full octave independently.

He has child-sized brooms, mops, and dust cloths among other implements, and receives precise, hands-on lessons teaching him the steps he needs to successfully complete each task. The first area of the classroom a child typically encounters when he joins at 2.5 to 3 years old is Practical Life. If there is no space in the school you are interested in, or you’d like to enroll your child in a school which is in its pre-open stage, you can join our waitlist.
The best way to get to know us is by visiting us and seeing the Montessori classroom yourself! Feel free to schedule a tour with our director if you are currently seeking a learning environment for your little one(s). Children’s House Montessori School does not discriminate on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, disability, or sexual orientation.
In addition, all other areas of the curriculum and the presentation of activities themselves are designed to indirectly teach skills needed for language and literacy development. Most materials, for example, must be grasped by little knobs, requiring the child to practice the pincer grip he’ll later use when writing. Similarly, most materials and activities are organized such that a child must follow a right-to-left and top-to-bottom pattern, just like a child will later use when reading. Located in a peaceful wooded setting in Reston, Virginia, Children’s House Montessori School offers Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs for children aged 3 to 6.
It truly is a privilege to do the work we do and we take our responsibility to the children in our care very seriously. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. We look forward to welcoming you and your child to the Children’s House family. Cultural Activities are a specific extension of the language curriculum where children begin to acquire a sense of historical fact, classification of physical geography and an appreciation of cultural differences.
"My children fell in love with this school as soon as they got here. The teachers create an incredibly caring and peaceful environment, perfect for nurturing growth." Ms. Angel’s goal is to earn a Bachelor’s Degree and an Accelerated Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education for Diverse Learners and a license to teach at a public school. She enjoys being outdoors and watching the discoveries the children make on our natural playground.
Above all, the child forms an ingrained sense of his own capability, empowering him to surmount challenges and persist through setbacks in this and in other areas of life. All our campuses comply with state licensing and regulatory bodies, and are held to industry-leading operational standards through national and international accrediting agencies. There is an outdoor space at every Guidepost Montessori Children’s House, and it’s used every day for children to learn and play.
Guidepost Montessori offers a holistic education approach with 120+ schools, virtual options, and language immersion. Our curriculum fosters independence, creativity, and a love of learning. You will most likely see the Head of School, Assistant Head of School, and your child's Lead Guide or Assistant Guide on a daily basis. The Head of School is responsible for leading the entire campus, with support from the Assistant Head of School. They ensure the delivery of an exceptional Montessori program and help build a strong community among staff, parents and children. At Guidepost Montessori, Children's House teachers are called Lead Guides and Assistant Guides (this helps highlight the fact that we believe the child is at the center of the learning process, not the adult).
Every morning starts with movement, games, or yoga to give the children an opportunity to stretch and move. Afternoons also include music, movement and games to help children stay active. These cycles of activity prevent children from spending long periods of time sat at a desk or on the floor, which isn't good for young growing bodies. Each classroom has age-appropriate activities and promotes self-guided learning. A Montessori classroom is a very calm, peaceful and orderly place where children know what to expect. The order and predictability enhance focus in learning as students build independence.
